SYLACAUGA, Ala. (Sept. 21, 2020) – The HMG Stroke Play, the fourth event in the 2020 PGA Tour Stroke Play series, took place at the charming FarmLinks Golf Club in Pursell Farms on Monday. Thirty players were welcomed to the property with a crisp fall-like morning of 60 degrees and gusty winds, making way for a beautiful day to play golf – a fitting start to the first day of fall.
Players were shot gunned at 10:00 a.m. on holes one through thirteen and did not waste any time to start tacking on birdies to their scorecards. Curtis Ohrn (FarmLinks G.C.) was able to make birdie on five holes on the front nine and finished with a four-under 32 going out. He made a couple of bogeys on the back nine but was able to carve out three more birdies on holes 16, 17 and 18 to finish with a five-under par 67. Cory Etter (Pine Hill C.C.) was able to match Ohrn’s five-under par round with a bogey-free round, making two birdies on his front nine and three on his back nine.
Though impressive, these rounds would not be enough to top Todd McCorkle (Old Overton Club) and his seven-under par round of 65. McCorkle also turned in a blemish-free scorecard making five birdies on his back nine alone. He was also first in scoring on all par-threes and par-fives. McCorkle breezed to his first victory of 2020, and with it, moved himself to first place in the OMEGA Assistant Player of the Year race.
Rounding out the top five is Section President, John Carney (Riverchase C.C.), who finished alone in fourth place with a round of four-under par 68. Finally, Andrew Brewster (C.C. of Birmingham) and Jeff Jordan (Mountain Brook Club) finished tied for fifth with rounds of three-under par 69.
The Alabama–NW Florida PGA would like to thank Curtis Ohrn, Chris Burley and Dylan Shephard for hosting our PGA Professionals and their hospitality at Pursell Farms. Additionally, a big appreciation goes to Sean Noth and Barry Hawkins of HMG Accessories for their support of the 2020 Stroke Play Series.
