Lake Days

ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. (June 7, 2021) – The Alabama–NW Florida PGA and its Members enjoyed a day along Lake Martin for the playing of the 2021 E-Z-GO Pro-Pro Championship.  Thirty two-man teams gathered at the beautiful Willow Point Golf & Country Club Monday to compete in one of the Section’s most special events.  The day’s forecast called for mostly cloudy and damp conditions as players began their round with a 10:00 a.m. shotgun start.  As the forecasted rain was held off for a majority of the day, players were able to take advantage of benign conditions at Willow Point – an uncharacteristic addition to the day.

Teams would face three different formats as they wove their way through Willow Point – including Alternate Shot on holes 1 through 6, Best Ball on holes 7 through 12 and finally a Scramble on holes 13 through 18.  The team of Andrew Brewster/Garrett Powell got off to a hot start making three birdies and one bogey on their opening six holes in the Alternate Shot portion of their round– they went out in two-under-par 34.  On the back nine they were able to make another five birdies – three during their Best Ball portion and two during the Scramble.  They finished coming in with a five-under-par back nine of 31.  Meanwhile, the team of Matt Sheppard/Troy Raybon also got off to a hot start making three birdies and one bogey to follow Brewster & Powell, making the turn with a two-under-par 34.  They, too, found more birdies on the back nine and came in with a five-under-par back nine of 31.

Rounding out the tied for second position was the team of Curtis Ohrn/Jake Greer.  While they only saw two birdies fall on their front nine, they were able to tear up the back nine – taking full advantage of the Best Ball and Scramble portions of the competition.  They made six birdies on their back nine to come in with an impressive six-under-par 30.  Finally, the team of Mike Genovese/Todd Bailey had a blemish-free day – making their day on Lake Martin almost seamless.  They began with three birdies on their front nine and came home with an impressive five birdies and an eagle to post a 28 on their back nine to post an eleven-under-par round of 61 and take the title over the teams of Ohrn/Greer, Brewster/Powell and Sheppard/Raybon by four shots.  Rounding out the top five was the team of Rea Schuessler/Scott Smith with a round of six-under-par 66.

The Alabama–NW Florida PGA would like to thank the E-Z-GO team, Michael Howell and David Tennant and Matt Sheppard along with the rest of his staff at Willow Point Golf & Country Club for their support of the Section and its PGA Members.  As the summer heats up, so too does the Section tournament schedule with the next event being the Stroke Play Series Event No. 3 presented by Biolyte and Golf Surprize at the RTJ Golf Trail at Capitol Hill (Legislator) on Monday, June 21.  The summer will then continue with the Fourth Stroke Play Series Event at Huntsville Country Club and then, after a two-year hiatus, the return of the Alabama Open at Twin Bridges Golf Club in Gadsden.
