ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. (Nov. 12, 2019) – The 2019 Team Championship presented by the PGA Tour was contested at the always-beautiful Willow Point Golf & Country Club.  A field of twenty-four teams comprised of PGA Professionals from across the Section and neighboring Sections took to it Monday for a season-ending showdown.  The format for this year’s Team Championship included a team Best Ball during the first round and a Scramble during the Second Round.  It would be the team of Jordan Debonis of The Ledges and Section Secretary Kevin Klein of Dothan Country Club who took home the title.

Round one was met with sunny skies, calm conditions and above average temperatures climbing in to the mid-sixties.  The team of John Karabasz of Moore’s Mill Club and Jerry Bavaro of Indian Pines Golf Course took the early lead with four birdies on their front nine and five on their back nine finishing with an eight-under par 64.  Following closely behind were the teams of Justin Waltman (RTJ Oxmoor Valley) and Dominic Diaz (RTJ Ross Bridge) with a round of seven-under par 65.  Additionally, the team from Shoal Creek which included Clay Brown and Garrett Powell finished at seven-under thanks to a pair of hole outs for eagle on holes five and six!

Round two arrived along with blustery conditions and temperatures which had fallen more than thirty degrees.  Play was delayed an hour from originally scheduled to allow any weather to completely move through the area.  The team of Jordan Debonis and Kevin Klein got off to a decent start making two birdies and an eagle on the front nine, however the duo was able to run away from the field birdieing five holes on the back nine to end up with an astounding nine-under par round of 63.  The team of Paul Reid and Andrew Peyton from Indian Hills Country Club filed in closely behind backing up their first round 66 with another round of 66.  Jon-Michael Goins of Callaway Golf and David Church of the Gulf States PGA Section also went 66-66 as a team to tie for second.

The Alabama-NW Florida PGA would like to extend its deepest thanks to Matt Sheppard, PGA Director of Golf, and the rest of the Willow Point staff for its premium accommodations for our PGA Professionals, their guests and our staff.
