Birmingham, AL (March 18, 2019) – Spring has sprung in Birmingham and the 2019 Alabama – NW Florida PGA tournament season is officially underway with the playing of the 2019 Golf Max Stroke Play – Series Event No. 1.

Fifty-one players teed off at 10:00 AM in a shotgun start at Inverness Country Club.  A cooler start to the day was followed by sunny skies and a stiff breeze, which proved to be a challenge for many players.  Mike Genovese, Life Member, and Eric Williamson, PGA Director of Golf at Shoal Creek Club, both fired 2-under par rounds of 69 after the 18-hole competition. Ultimately, it would be Genovese who took home the title in a one-hole playoff.

The playoff took place at the drivable par-4 eighteenth hole.  With a gallery of about 15 looking on, both players took a crack at driving the green.  Genovese finished in the greenside bunker short about 50 feet from the hole while Williamson left himself with a tough pitch over two bunkers to a tight hole location.  Genovese navigated the awkward stance successfully and put his ball to about five feet while Williamson did the same with a nifty spinning wedge shot that finished to four feet. Genovese drained his left-to-right slider while Williamson lipped-out his putt to extend the playoff.

The Alabama – NW Florida PGA would like to extend its sincerest thanks to PGA Director of Golf, Troy Raybon, and the rest of the Inverness staff for hosting a great event to kick off the season.  Also, a big thank you to Rich Santagata, Jr. and Golf Max for sponsoring the first Alabama – NW Florida PGA Stroke Play Series Event of 2019.
