DOTHAN, Ala. (Oct. 6, 2020) – The Gulf Coast Chapter Championship was contested at Dothan Country Club Monday and Tuesday. The original host of this championship, Lakewood Golf Club in Fairhope, unfortunately was not in a place to host due to the lingering effects of Hurricane Sally – our thanks to Section Vice President, Kevin Klein and his staff, for stepping in last minute to host the event.
In the Open Division, Todd Bailey (Dewsweepers Performance Academy) was able to get his tournament off to a solid start with an opening round of two-under par 68. Jordan Debonis (The Ledges) was able to do one better firing a first-round 67 and took the lead going into the final round. Closely behind the leaders were Steve Cutler (Wynlakes G & C.C.) at two-over par, David Pilkington (Pensacola C.C.), Mike Giammaresi (Regatta Bay G & C.C.), Paul McClure (RTJ Golf Trail at Magnolia Grove), and Jammie Lett (Hoover C.C.) all at three-over par. The Final Round brought with it more low scores in the Open Division as Bailey was able to pull away from the field with a round of four-under par 66. He would beat out Debonis, who shot a final round two-under par 70, by three shots to take the title.
The Senior Division was comprised of six players. Lawrence Auer (Azalea City G.C.) and John Carney (Riverchase C.C.) both got off to solid starts shooting two-over par rounds of 72. Kevin Klein (Dothan Country Club) and Neil Thompson (RTJ Golf Trail at Oxmoor Valley) would lead the way after Round One with a pair of even par 70’s. Klein and Thompson would falter some during the final round while Auer made a move to turn in a winning score of three-under par 67. This would ultimately be enough to oust Carney and Klein by three shots.
Finally, Ed Davis (Frank House G.C.) was able to beat out Blair Kline (Rocky Bayou C.C.) and Brent Krause (Wynlakes G & C.C.) with two solid rounds of 72 and 73. Davis went on to win in the Super Senior Division by over fifteen shots.
The Section is very grateful to the staff at Dothan Country Club for their flexibility and volunteerism as they were able to step in and host a great Chapter event for our PGA Professionals and Associates. Additionally, we would like to thank the PGA Tour for their support of our 2020 Alabama and Gulf Coast Chapter Championships.
