DeBonis Captures Match Play Championship
A competitive road to the Match Play crown reached its conclusion on Monday, July 6th, as Jordan DeBonis put together a stellar performance at Vestavia Country Club to capture the 2026 Alabama – NW Florida Section Match Play Championship.
The tournament’s final day began with two highly competitive Semifinal matches. DeBonis earned his spot in the final round by edging past Paul McClure in a tight 1-up battle. On the other side of the bracket, Ben Wood put on a strong performance, defeating Curtis Ohrn 6 and 4 to set up the afternoon showdown.
With the championship on the line, DeBonis maintained his steady play, defeating Wood 4 and 3 to officially secure the title and cap off an exciting Match Play season.
The road to the finals began back on April 20th, when the Section’s Match Play season kicked off at Indian Hills Country Club in Tuscaloosa for the eighth consecutive year. Following the Qualifying Round, players were seeded and the official bracket was set.
An action-packed First Round saw a strong group of competitors advance, including Christian Bosso, Lawrence Auer, Allen Michael Burnett, DeBonis, McClure, Cooper Simmons, Dominic Diaz, Jeff Jordan, Robert Whitt, Zack Campbell, Ohrn, Clay Tyler, Bryant Raynowska, Brad Story, Wood, and Tee Brown.
The remaining field returned to Indian Hills on Tuesday morning, April 21st, for the Second Round. Advancing to the afternoon’s Third Round were Bosso, DeBonis, McClure, Diaz, Campbell, Ohrn, Raynowska, and Wood.
The battle for a spot in the Semifinals featured fantastic matchups across the board:
DeBonis def. Bosso, 2 and 1
McClure def. Diaz, 2 and 1
Ohrn def. Campbell, 1 up
Wood def. Raynowska, 6 and 5
