MOUNTAIN BROOK, Ala. (May 24, 2021) – The second Stroke Play Series Event presented by HMG Accessories was contested at the beautiful Mountain Brook Club on Monday.  Forty players competed on the Donald Ross design on a day that forecasted the highest temperatures of the year so far in central Alabama – this didn’t stop players from posting some impressive scores.  “It’s so fun to be able to share this place with PGA Professionals and Associates in our Section,” says PGA Director of Golf, Jeff Jordan. “I love hearing someone say, ‘This is the first time I’ve been here,’ because it’s a chance for our golf course to shine.”

The day started with a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m. on a warm and muggy morning – indicating the official return of summer to Alabama.  Section Member, Todd Bailey and Todd McCorkle (Old Overton Club) got off to a hot start each making three birdies on the front nine.  Bailey would make two more birdies on his back nine on holes 11 and 14, but got tripped up by a bogey on hole 16 to post a score of three-under-par 68.  McCorkle would falter some on his back nine only making one birdie on hole number 10 and three bogies on holes 12, 13 and 17.  Meanwhile, Ron Stromeyer (Pine Tree Country Club) played smooth and steady making birdies on holes 1, 5 and 9 to make the turn in three-under-par 33.  Maintaining his blemish-free round, he was able to carve out two more birdies on his back nine on holes 10 and 16 posting a round of 5-under-par 66 and enough to give him the clubhouse lead and eventually the title.  “It’s been a long time coming,” says Stromeyer.  “I don’t think I have won a Section event since 2012 so it’s nice to see everything come together in one day – especially at a place like this.  Lots of hard work has been put into this and I’m excited to see what’s in store for the rest of this season.”

Rounding out the top five is Kelly Welsh, PGA Director of Golf at Inverness Country Club.  A previous Member of the Rocky Mountain and South Florida PGA Sections, Kelly started at Inverness about one month ago and showed out with a strong round of one-under-par 70.  Following Kelly was Robbie Blackwell (Hoover Country Club) who also finished at one-under-par 70.  Finally, Jeff Jordan posted a respectable even-par of 71 to finish alone in sixth place.

The Alabama–NW Florida PGA would like to thank Sean Noth of HMG Accessories and Owner, Barry Hawkins for their support of the 2021 Stroke Play Series, the Section and our PGA Professionals.  Additionally, the Section would like to extend its sincerest thanks to Jeff Jordan, Matt Logsdon, Susan Zapin and the rest of the Mountain Brook Club staff for hosting a fantastic event.  The Section is looking forward to beginning its summer swing beginning with the 2021 E-Z-GO Pro-Pro at Willow Point Golf & Country Club on June 7 followed by our Third Stroke Play Series Event of the year at RTJ Golf Trail at Capitol Hill (Legislator) on June 21.
